Hi Mike,

Firstly I just want to say what an informative and helpful site this has been from someone who has no experience of Mozambique.

Last summer I went to South Africa. It was my first time in Africa and I must admit I fell in love with the place. I was repeatedly recommended Mozambique as a destination by many South Africans that I met. Last month I decided to book a trip for my girlfriend and myself. I have been trying to research as much as possible but I have a few questions that I would be grateful if you could help me with :)

Firstly, we arrive into Maputo. What is it like? I've heard mixed reviews. Similarly how many days is enough in Maputo? What would you recommend seeing? Where is good to eat and drink? Is it an expensive city?

We then head to Barra in Inhambane for 10 days. I was wondering if 10 days is too long a time there? We like beaches but we don't want to be totally secluded. I know there's activities around Barra but is there enough to sustain us for 10 days? I hear Tofo is a little bit more lively, how far is it driving from Barra? Is there even a taxi service around that area? How expensive is Barra/Tofo?

Now we are going to Inhambane and Maputo but is there anywhere else close to Maputo that we absolutely must visit?

To be honest anything that you can contribute to help us plan our trip would be amazing, we're very flexible :)

The visa issue I am sure you've been asked countless times so I'll refrain  Mozambique simply doesn't have a consulate in my country so I am not quite sure what I will do with this!

Thank you for your help

Hi again

Please note that I can only give brief replies to your queries via this forum. For a far more comprehensive and detailed response please make use of my Personal Mozguide service.

Three questions:
1) How are you getting around - public transport?
2) Are you looking for a beach or cultural experience, or a mix?
3) What time of the year will your trip be? My recommendations can change dependent on time of year.

Find my responses after your queries below:

MIKE: Yes Mozambique is very different to other African countries and this does have its challenges for example the main language is Portuguese.

Firstly, we arrive into Maputo. What is it like? I've heard mixed reviews. Similarly how many days is enough in Maputo? What would you recommend seeing? Where is good to eat and drink? Is it an expensive city?
MIKE: Last May, after a break of 5 years, I spent a week cycling around Maputo. Yes the traffic has become more chaotic and there has been a lot of building going on, but I really enjoyed my stay. Certainly not a city I would use my own vehicle to get around in, but easy when using local chapa minibuses, or metered taxis. Also Maputo is a great city to walk around in, but some areas must be avoided at night. I would spend 2 nights in Maputo. Maputo is expensive, but the Metical is losing value, making it cheaper.

We then head to Barra in Inhambane for 10 days. I was wondering if 10 days is too long a time there? We like beaches but we don't want to be totally secluded.
MIKE: I would spend 5 days at Tofo and 5 days at Vilanculos.

MIKE: Easy enough to get a ride via the road or even walk along the beach between Tofo and Barra. Accomm ranges from reasonable to quite pricey - guidance needed.

Now we are going to Inhambane and Maputo but is there anywhere else close to Maputo that we absolutely must visit?
MIKE: No.
To be honest anything that you can contribute to help us plan our trip would be amazing, we're very flexible :)
MIKE: Yes plenty more to add, but only if you use the "Personal Mozguide" option.

The visa issue I am sure you've been asked countless times so I'll refrain  Mozambique simply doesn't have a consulate in my country so I am not quite sure what I will do with this!
MIKE: If you can spend a day in Joburg or Pretoria you can get a visa at the Consulates, or get one on arrival at the border.

All of the best and have a great trip!

Hi Mike,

Apologies for the very late response however I wasn't able to log in on my other account to thank you!

I am travelling in May and my girlfriend is Brazilian so thankfully she speaks Portuguese which will hopefully make things easier.

I will definitely take up your mozguide option, I will be in contact closer to the date.

We will mostly be travelling around via public transport (taxi) however I was considering renting a car in Inhmabane. I think I'll split the 10 days in Inhambane with 5 days at Barra and 5 days at Tofo, I hear Barra is more quiet and that 10 days might be too much, although because they're so close will it really be THAT big a difference between Tofo and Barra?

Hi again

Barra and Tofo do have some similarities eg great beach and some excellent lodges, but the profile of visitors is not the same. Tofo is a coastal village with a few amenities such as market, shops, stalls etc and has visitors (many from outside of Africa) most of the year so more popular with independent travelers. solo backpackers etc, while Barra is more spread out and caters to families in own vehicle so pretty deserted outside of the South African tourist seasons (Easter, June/July and Dec/Jan). Barra has less local people and fishermen on the beach.

If you have a 4x4 rental, I would also consider splitting your time between Barra/Tofo and Vilanculos where you could do a dhow safari with www.sailaway.co.za

Looking forward to compiling your Personal Mozguide.
