From Tanzania to Lichinga through Unity I and II bridges

Hi everyone! Hey Mike!

I'm a Brazilian researcher and by mid-May I'll be conducting research in southern Tanzania and from there I must get to Lichinga for my survey duties. I will be travelling alone and without a vehicle of my own. I have the flexibility to go to either Songea or Masasi on the Tanzanian side to then proceed to Mozambique. I couldn't find much information about entering Niassa by road in public transportation (chapas, busses, pickup rides and the like), so I would like to know if the Unity II bridge at Matchedje/Segundo Congresso is operational, if there are regular transportation means between Songea and Lichinga and if it is indeed a preferable path over Unity I at Negomano, which appears to head to Mueda and countryside Cabo Delgado rather than Niassa. If the latter is true, should I cross at Negomano, I'd have to go all the way south to Montepuez before finding transport to Lichinga, right?
Lastly, about the road conditions, I reckon that by mid-May it should be okay to travel around because of lower rainfalls in the region, correct?

Thank you so much in advance! All the best!
Felipe

Hi Felipe
Welcome to Mozguide.

Firstly the only route between Tanzania and Mozambique that has regular and reliable public transport is via the Rovuma ferry at the Kilambo / Namoto border between Mtwara and Mocimboa da Praia. There are trucks that use the Negomano to Mueda road, but presently this is impassable due to heavy rain and in very poor condition.

Via Songea to Lichinga there may be irregular trucks offering a ride, but I cannot confirm this. I would still try this route as via Mocimboa da Praia is a very ling detour. I did a search on this forum and found this: www.mozguide.com/index.php/forum/trip-re...bridge-road-to-pemba

Go well and trip reports are always very welcome.

Mike.

Apologies I forgot to point out the important fact that Mozambique visas are not issued at any of the borders between Tanzania and Mozambique.

Hi Mike!
Thanks for your reply! Indeed it seems more tempting to take the shorter route through Segundo Congresso/Unity II, but I'll bear in mind the possibility of crossing at Kilambo/Namoto border and taking the Montepuez-Marrupa-Lichinga road like in that forum post you've mentioned. And thanks for warning me about the visa, I will get mine by the Mozambique Embassy in Brasília.

By the way, have you heard the news that the Lichinga-Cuamba train lines seems to have become operational and available for passengers since November? I've seen it in this link http://cdn.co.mz/presidente-da-republica-reinaugura-ferrovia-cuamba-lichinga/ . It should be quite an opportunity for those traveling without a car coming in/out of Niassa and I'm considering taking it myself on my way to Nampula, from where I'll fly to Maputo (after visiting Ilha de Moçambique, of course!). And I'll most certainly post here my trip report!

Thanks again for your advices! All the best,
Felipe

Hi Felipe

Yes travel using public transport from Tanzania to Lichinga is an adventure, but quite possible if you don't have a strict schedule. Yes I read about the Cuamba Lichinga line reopening but have not heard of anyone who has used it, yet.
