The short trip to Mozambique was over in a flash, what a shame!

10 hours was the right timing for the "crossing", but as we had an early, but leisurely, morning we bush camped at dusk, before reaching the border (going in the opposite direction to you, Andrè. I think that was probably easier the Moz side than the Zim side as well.

I had intended to make really detailed notes on each section, but looking at them now, I wasn't very clear, so here's the short overview instead!

The whole route was really easy, very bumpy at times and some large potholes at times, but you don't really expect anything else here, right?! No need to worry about little 4x4 experience, it's really not needed, at least in May!

The track is quite corrugated at the busier section closer to Mapinhane, but very wide.
From Ofisso heading west (other way for you Andrè) it's sand, but it's only soft in patches and nothing at all to worry about.
Around Maichala it's 2 lane sand and gravel.
If your version of Tracks 4 Africa (if you are using it), talks about dangerous drifts in the road, you can ignore them. There was nothing untoward anywhere throughout the day.
There were some "drive arounds" where the old track seems to be now more or less permanently waterlogged, but you'll see them more or less clearly. When it's not obvious, just keep reversing, you'll soon get to the alternative tracks.

Locals who were out and about were incredibly friendly. Scenery is pleasant.

All in all, it was just a really nice day and "drive in the country." Really glad we did it.

We didn't however, stop at the hotel. In fact I didn't even notice it, but I wasn't looking that hard.
The place we stayed at on the coast said it's rather musty in the rooms these days. Better to ask if you can camp in the yard....

The border guards, on both sides of the border, were incredibly helpful, friendly and smiley. Not even a hint of angling for a bribe or being difficult. Absolutely 100%, brilliant!

Have a great trip!

Thanks so much for your extensive report. We might actually camp as well, either using the Machaila campsite or otherwise bushcamp. In any case, with your very reassuring and enthousiastic message, I am even more looking forward to the trip. Hope it will go as smoothly as yours.

Thanks again, André

Thanks for this very useful feedback.

No surprises that all went well. Mozambique is generally a very friendly and fulfilling experience.
