Bom dia, hello !
We are 2 french people travelling in Africa with our own Toyota Land Cruiser. We will be in north Mozambique at the beginning of June.
Coming from Tanzania, we will go to Pemba and then to Lichinga. On the way, we would like to go and discover Niassa Reserve. We know that Niassa reserve is not very developped for tourist for the moment but our Land cruiser is well equipped like a motorhome and we are self-sufficient.

I would like to know if it is possible for us to come to Niassa Reserve for a couple of days. I have read that we could camp at Maputo Camp or Begg's Camp. Can you confirm that to me ? I have sent an email to the Niassa Reserve Contact but no answer yet for the moment.

I don't know exactly what are the road conditions we can expect, especially in beginning of June
What is the best way to come to Niassa from Pemba and how much time it could take ?
The same for Lichinga : What is the best way to come from Niassa to Lichinga and how much time it could take ?
I have read on your site recent news about Pemba / Malawi road via Cuamba but we would like to take the northern one via Marrupa. May be it is not a real good idea ! ;)

And of course, if you have any other information or advice you think we should know !
Thank you in advance for your answer
Best regards
Obrigada,
Nadine,

Ola Nadine e bem vindo ao Mozguide!

I apologize for the slow reply.

My latest information is that the roadworks between Montepuez and Marrupa have stopped for the past months as funding was not available. During the rains this route can become impassable as there are five bridges that are either under construction or need to be constructed, but by June the route should be dry enough.

Your best contact in the area is the Niassa Lion Project run by a wonderful group of people and always very helpful and welcoming to visitors. www.facebook.com/niassalionproject/ Tell them that Mike from mozguide sent you!

Also this very reliable site has some fairly recent useful info: bradtmozambique.wordpress.com/category/montepuez/

Go well and if new questions arise, please ask.

Feedback and trips reports are always very welcome.

Mike.

Hi Mike
Sorry for the delay too, we are now in Tanzania since yesterday beginning our trip ....
Thank you very much for these informations, very useful as usual !
Maybe you know an email contact for Lion's Project of Niassa, because we don't have a facebook account ;-( and i cannot contact them.
You confirm that the road seems to be quite tough., I hope that there will not rain anymore. Here in Tanzania, the rainiy season arrived very late and still here. I cross the fingers not the same in northern Moz as the roads are famous to be worse than here , we will see !
I agree with you, Bradt guide is the best guide for a lot of countries in Africa
Last question, even if I know that it depends a lot on the road conditions, Pemba - Niassa reserve, is it doable in one day ? the same for Niassa Reserve Lichniga ?
Obrigada
