Quirimbas on A Budget

Hello Mike! How are you? This is Farah from Cairo.

I will be flying from Maputo to Pemba in late August. I'll arrive at Pemba early Saturday morning and leave Monday morning to Maputo.

I wanted to know the best way to explore the Quirimbas islands on a budget (say 200€). I would love to visit the Matemo island but couldn't find any relevant information on how to get there from Pemba.

Looking forward to hearing back from you. Thanks Mike!

Best regards,

Farah Nabil

Hi Farah

Nice to hear from you again. Two days to get from Pemba to Matemo and back! Possible, but you would have to charter a plane which already blows your 200 Euro budget, plus another 500 or so. From Ibo you could charter a boat to Matemo, but the 2-day limit makes this all really silly and impractical.

Me? I would go direct from Pemba airport to either Ilala Lodge or Il Pirata at nearby Murrebue.

Matemo is OK, Ibo is fantastic, but not in a hurry!

Mike

Thank you for your help Mike! I meant 200€ excluding the plane ticket. Is going to murruebe possible on this budget?

Also, how much is a boat from there to ibo or Matemo?

Hi Farah

The problem still is that with the tides limiting when boats can sail, even if you fly to Ibo (not sure if you can fly direct to Matemo, if Yes that makes it viable), you will only perhaps get to Matemo on Saturday afternoon late and would have to return to Ibo Sunday morning. No point to this.

Murrebue is just 40km south of Pemba and is a fantastic beach. You would have two full days there. You could also look at Nzuwa Lodge.
