Hi Nadine

I did a search on this forum and found the name. It is Mchenga Wede at Mbueca village.

Hi Mike
So we are back from Mozambique now since 2 month already !
A wonderful trip in Northern Mozambique with plenty of stunning landscapes and above all incredibly warmful, nice and welcoming people !!!
As promised, a short trip report about Niassa Lake area. Our journey was really too short but very intense in emotions and sensations

LICHINGA :

Road Marrupa - Lichinga: 4,5 hours : good tar apart at the end where sections of track alternate with tar -

Shopping : Possible refueling Total station run by a very helpful SouthAf. You can find there good things and imported product. Good products awelle at the big station outside the town located at the junction between Mandimba road and Marrupa road.

Also good bakery - pastry in the main avenue after the Total station and before the hospital.

Accommodation: we did not find camping. On the other hand, Residential Bendiak is indeed a good address. Secure parking, large bedroom with living room, kitchen and bathroom (hot water). Breakfast included. Staff very friendly. Residential Bendiak: Room for 2: 2300 meticais

Road to Metangula from Lichinga: 2 big hours of tar. The road narrows gradually and at the end several portions full of potholes.

METANGULA:

Unfortunately we did not have time to explore the city and its peninsula. We pushed as far as Chiwanga, 7 km from Metangula to camp at the complex CETUKA LDA which had burned but finally reopened although it is still in reconstruction. No sanitary dedicated to campsite, then we were given the keys to a room. No running water. Possibility to order meals. Staff not really attentive but kept up. Ideal location of the complex on a beautiful beach near the heart of the village. At the front row to observe all the scenes of daily life of the locals: fishermen, children who come to seek water or have fun, women who come to do the dishes or the laundry, ... simple atmosphere in the heart of a particularly welcoming and warmful population, as is often the case in northern Mozambique

Cetuka Campsite: 700 Meticais

COBUE
Road Chiwanga - Cobue : 3 hours of well maintained dirt road, sometimes easy going, more chaotic in the villages at the beginning. Bad conditions just before arriving to Cobué when you have to go down and up the escarpment, even if pieces in climb and descent of the escarpment were cemented. Ballad very nice in the village with always warm and friendly reception of the inhabitants.
Camping Khango Beach: very rudimentary and in a not brilliant state but happy that it exists. Sanitary minimum. No running water. Possibility to rent rooms. The TV in the open room is the rendezvous of the children of the district, show guaranted !

Khango Beach Campsite : 400 Meticais

MANDIMBA:
Road Lichinga - Mandimba : 4h30 of bad tar or track more or less bad until Mandimba.
To sleep there, Complexo Massinga is a good address as Mike said : secure parking, fairly large room. No running water. Possibility to order meals. Helpfull and friendly staff. No name or sign on the building. Ask to find.

Double room: 1500 Meticais

Other establishments are located on the lake but are accessible only by boat or are in a more expensive category:

Metangula
Mchenga Wede backpackers unfortunately doesn't exist anymore Nkwichi Lodge can only be reached by boat and is also very expensive.
I have contacted Mbuna Bay reachable by car but no possibilities for campers and were quite too expensive for our budget even if it seems to be a very nice place

Two nights in a bush bungalow for two persons would be 4x120USD (or the equivalent in MZN or Euros).

Cobue :
House of chambo just opened in June 2017 ! It is best reached by lichinga and then onto cobue, from cobue you can now drive a little further on towards mala but i don't think you will get all the way to the lodge. this is why it is so cool! you can then either walk the rest of the way or get a boat to pick you up. the roads wil be ok and you can find a safe place to park your car. if you are coming from a bit further south then your access road will be via metungula on the lake and then onto cobue. these are some of the most amazing and remote areas in mozambique so enjoy!

Meponda
You might contact N'tendele Lodge in Meponda ( www.ntendele.com ), a new place run by young Norwegians (I think) which offers dormitory beds for 30$ including breakfast.
Here is their answer when we contacted them :
We do offer camping and it costs - 1000 meticais per person per night and you get access to our kitchen and toilet. As for parking we have a guard that can look after your car in meponda as the lodge is situated about 30 mins away from meponda and we travel by boat
They are on booking.com and Whatsapp : +258 87 407 4732

Thank you very much Mike for your very helpful forum. I am happy to bring aswell my contribution

Boa Noite !
