Transport from Maputo to Tofo

Hi! I have a question regarding transport from Maputo to Tofo. We will be spending about a week in Tofo at the end of November to dive and we have been looking for the best option to get to Inhambane airport. The problem is that that there is only one flight (LAM) from Maputo to Inhambane per day and that all combinations of our flights landing in Maputo only come in after the departure of that LAM flight. We were wondering if there is another way to get to Inhambane/Tofo such that we donot have to spend a night in Maputo on the way in and on the way out. This would save us 2 days which we could spend diving!

My questions are -

1. If we land in Maputo at 1:30pm, is it safe to rent a car and drive to Tofo at that time. What would the costs be approximately?
2. Do car rentals come with a driver in case we would like to rent the car only one way? What would the approximate costs be for this?
3. What is the condition of roads from Maputo to Tofo and how much actual drive time should we be accounting for?
4. Is there any other way to get from Maputo to Tofo?

We would be grateful for any help!

Thanks,
Pankil Shah

Hi Pankil and welcome to Mozguide.

MIKE: Are there just two of you?
See my responses within your queries below:

1. If we land in Maputo at 1:30pm, is it safe to rent a car and drive to Tofo at that time.

MIKE: Are there two of you? No too late. By the time you have done customs and immigration formalities, it will probably be 2.30pm. It is at least a six hour drive to Inhambane town and very dangerous (due to unlit vehicles, drunk drivers and pedestrians, livestock etc) to drive after dark. You must stay a night in Maputo and depart for Inhambane at 0500 following morning

What would the costs be approximately?
2. Do car rentals come with a driver in case we would like to rent the car only one way? What would the approximate costs be for this?

MIKE: Yes EuropCar and Avis can provide drivers, but very expensive. I would consider www.tours2moz.com/ and www.facebook.com/marc73easton/

3. What is the condition of roads from Maputo to Tofo and how much actual drive time should we be accounting for?
MIKE: Generally very good. Note that, due to the frequent towns and villages where the speed limit is 60kph, your average speed will not exceed 70kph. Maputo to Inhambane is 480km and another 35km fairly bumpy tarmac to Tofo. So around 8-9hrs Maputo to Tofo including a few restroom and fuel stops,

4. Is there any other way to get from Maputo to Tofo?

MIKE: Other than the shuttles I mentioned? Yes plenty of local buses and chapas (mini-buses) that depart Maputo from 0400. Crowded, uncomfortable, relatively cheap and (mostly) get you to where you are going.

We would be grateful for any help!

My pleasure.

Mike
