Hi - this may just be a difference between Northern & Southern Hemisphere English, but I've noticed in a few places mention of "notarised copies" of documents e.g. passports, to save handing over the original.

Does this just mean photocopies, or is it some other kind of specially certified copy that would need to be done by a special office in the country being travelled in?

Many thanks

Not just photocopies but copies that you have handed to a notary public (notario publico) and had officially stamped as certified copies of the original. Ask for the Notario Publico in the main towns and in Maputo:
NOTARY OFFICES IN MAPUTO Av. Vladimir Lenine, 1472; tel. 428421 Rua Bagamoyo, 48; tel. 428422 Av. Samora Machel, 11; tel. 428417 Av Eduardo Mondlane, 2885; .

I had copies of my car documents and drivers license (SADC) notarised. But the lady traffic cop in Pemba stopped me and told me that "in Mozambique only originals are accepted". ARGH!!! She made me go back to my house to get my originals. And there is NOTHING I could do to try and convince her otherwise. So frustrating... (at least she didnt try and fine me)

The traffic cops in Pemba are a law unto themsleves, there are 3 of them, and they regularly have a road block on the road between the Pemba Beach Hotel and the Nautalis.

(And yes they WILL stop you everyday even though they KNOW that they've already checked your papers)

But I've never had trouble anywhere else in Moz with notarised copies.

OK so another document is needed. Can be a huge hassle, depending on how long it takes the police to endorse your 'decleracao' but what I did a few years ago was report that my passport, driver's license, vehicle papers, camera, wallet (etc) had been stolen (roubados). It took a few hours at a police station (esquadrao) in Maputo, but then I was the proud owner of the most useful document that I have ever used in Moz - and it worked for 3 months before officials decided it was time I replaced my lost pieces of paper.

Is it necessary to use a Notary in Mozambique or could you have these copies notarised in f.i. South Africa?
