Hi there

I was wondering what (safe) bus services are out there for travel between Pemba and Beira?

We need to get some of our 'cultural exchange' students (150 of them) down to Beira for a week in October...

Some questions I've been asked to answer are:
- Do the buses have Air Con?
- Do the buses only travel by day, or do they go straight thru overnight?
- How long would a trip on a bus take from Pemba - Beira (best-case and worst-case)?

Seeing as I have only ever driven down to Beira myself, I dont really know what's available. I see the Grupo Mecula buses all the time, but other than that I just know of chapas that do the route... but chapas for 150 people???

Quotes on renting 2 buses for a week from Grupo Mecula got us a quote for about USD $21000.... ouch!

Any info or insight would be great thanks!

Hi Nikki

A tough one - so far only come up with Grupo Mecula. I have seen other buses on this route but so far can't find out how to contact them. Will keep plugging away.

Hi

Sarah formerly of Bay Diving in Nacala sent me a bus contact which I have emailed to you. Regarding the other questions:

Buses usually do not have aircon.
The law is still that buses are not permitted to travel by night although in my experience some still do.
Pemba to Beira by bus is 3 days, give or take a few hours. If a charter bus just pushed through then perhaps two days, overnighting in Mocuba.
