Hello all,

We're planning our trip to Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia in september. We want to take the train from Nampula to Cuamba and then want to travel to Lilongwe, Malawi.

Does anyone have done this before and could tell us what is the best and quickest way to do this?

We will be travelling by public transport.

In Lilongwe we want to hire a car to go to Zambia, to South Luangwa NP. Maybe we can hire a car before Lilongwe and travel by car to Lilongwe. I've found some car agencies in Mangochi, but when i search trough there website there is no availability.

In our itinerary i've reserverd 2 days for travelling from Cuamba to Lilongwe, is that realistic?

Does anyone has a good advice to travel by public transport between these places or maybe a good tip for a car agency before Lilongwe?

Many thanks!

Hi there,
I can help you until Lilongwe:
1. Take the train Nampula-Cuamba, it goes every day at 5.00am. In Cuamba there are some pousadas whére you can stay. Read more in my Cuamba Thread:
www.mozguide.com/fala/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID...7&SearchTerms=cuamba

2. Go from Cuamba to Mandimba or Liwonde. The problem is that the train from Entre Lagos /Nayuchi to Liwonde is not running anymore. So I don´t know if there are any trucks going from Cuamba to Entre Lagos and from Nayuchi to Liwonde. When you arrive in Liwonde, there are a lot of minibusses every day to Lilongwe. If you have to stay a night in Liwonde , there is a nice and cheap Hotel called Mtima Pansi Resthouse.
If this trip to Liwonde via Entre Lagos is not possible, go with one of the Minibusses from Cuamba to Mandimba (best early in the morning). In Mandimba you can cross the border to Malawi. You reach to Chiponde 2km after the passport control. In Chiponde there are trucks to Mangochi, where you can find cheap accomodation easily. Next day you can take the bus to Lilongwe (about 9 hours).

You can take it within 2 days from Cuamba to Lilongwe, but you need a little bit of luck and strong nerves. You better calculate 3 days, in Africa always something is going diferent than you thought before.

I can recommand staying for a while in Cuamba. It is an interessting place. Even the small towns on the way from Nampula to Cuamba are interessting (Malema, Ribaué, Mutuáli - read the threads here in the forum). Do not rush through this beautiful part of Moçambique !

So far,
Andreas

Hi

nothing much to add to what Andreas has said except that you will not find a rental vehicle other than in Blantyre and Lilongwe and I doubt that these will be allowed across the border.

Thank you very much for your answers.

I've looked again at our itinerary and maybe we're going to skip a part of north Mozambique and spent a couple of days at lake Malawi. So maybe we are not taking the train from Nampula to Cuamba. It sounds really great, but so many choices ;).

I've sent a couple of e-mails to the car agencies listed in www.theeye.co.mw/ . A couple of them replied and it looks good to rent a 4x4 from Lilongwe.

Hi

thanks for the feedback. I had a look at The Eye Magazine - very informative and a recommended read for anyone travelling in Malawi. If you intend driving to Zambia just make absolute sure that the rental company gives you clear, written permission and get info on all the legalities of taking a vehicle across the border.
