Hi Mike,

Great forum you've got here, very useful and fun to read.

We're heading to Mozambique for the first time in september. I know, still some time away, but half the fun is in reading up on your destination, right?

We could do with some help, so a few questions for this forum:
- We have a little less then three weeks to get from Maputo to Nampulo. Anything we should or shouldn't skip?
- We are travelling on a bit of a budget, but would like to splash out for a night or two along the way. Any tips on reasonably priced but still nice accomodation? I'm thinking huts on stilts in the sea, that kind of thing :-)

Thanks!

Hi Linde

sorry missed this one! See my answers within your questions below:

MIKE: I will assume that you are using public transport. If in a 4x4 then my advice changes a lot. I would skip Bilene and head straight up to Tofo - look up Nordime's lodge, Dino's, Bamboozi and Turtle Cove. Tofo good for 3 or 4 days - dive with the Mantas.
Then go to Pomene Lodge for the chalets on stilts, or cheaper accom if needed. No regular public transport from Massinga to Pomene but quite a lot of local traffic going that way and you can also phone the lodge to see if they have anyone coming into town for supplies. www.barraresorts.com

Then get to Vilanculos, stay at Zombie Cucumber or at Smugglers backpacker www.smugglers.co.za Do an overnight dhow trip with www.sailaway.co.za

After Vilanculos I would spend a day or two in Inhassoro at SETA then a long hop up to Gorongsa which does cater to independent travellers see: www.gorongosa.net .

then I would look up Zalala Lodge www.zalalabeach.com Zalala is not a pretty beach and the sea dirty due to outflow of the zambezi river but this area is an authentic experience of how the fishermen of Moz live - not just another tourist stop.

And then on to Nampula and you really must make time for two nights on Ilha de Mocambique at Casa Branca.
