Hi. Am an experienced bike touruer and am planning a biking trip in Mozambique for about 3 1/2 weeks beginning first week in August. Was thinking of riding from Maputo to Inhambane or Vilanculos. Then taking a bus up to Beira or Quelimane and biking inland from there for a week, finially busing it up to Cuamba and head to Ilha Mozambique or up to Pemba before flying back to Maputo.

Have been not been able to find much on the internet regarding bike touring in Mozambique. What do you think of the idea? I will camp (and stay in hotels/hostels when available.) Am going solo and will be doing some filming for a project I am working on. Do you forsee any problems?
Also wanted to try to see some of the coast and some of the inland areas. Can you recommend another itinerary? (Usually like to bike 70-130 KM a day depending on the road conditions...) Any advice/ insight you have would be greatly appreciated.

I have cycled (is this what you mean, around here biking is by motorbike?) extensively around Mozambique. I would take a bus to Inhambane, cycle around this area then cycle up to Vilankulo for a rest and then bus to Inchope and cycle up to Quelimane and catch a plane or bus to Nampula and then cyle dhow to Ilha and take the coastal road to Nacala. Leave out Pemba.

Don't try to get anywhere in particular, there are little villages with friendly people en-route and I usually camp at their schools. Most now have sealed boreholes with hand pumps for good water but I would carry 10 litres just to make sure. Your expected distances are reasonable. Beware though that a foreigner on a bike is quite a spectacle for the locals and they may be a little 'rude' but if you smile and find some local cyclists to peddle with they will be your best guides and companions. Mozambicans cycle all over their country.

Would love to have some feedback as I really miss my care (and car) free pedalling days.

Just another point, when using a camera in Moz, it's always best to make friends with the locals and introduce the camera slowly (show the locals some pics of themselves) so that you and camera become part of the scene and then usually no-one objects to being filmed, or steals your camera.
