Hi, I live in Rwanda and a friend and I are planning a one week trip from October 27 - November 3. I was thinking of a couple days in Maputo but am not sure what to do the remaining days. Any suggestions? thank you, Mary

Hi Mary

apologies for the delay in responding to your email but here goes:

Firstly note that Maputo has a become a very busy and expensive city so you really must try to book all of your beds in advance; But yes still very much worth a visit to experience the eclectic architecture, culture, food, food and best of all the nightlife.

A very good guide to Maputo can be found at:
www.clubofmozambique.com/solutions1/lm.php?limite=0

Budget accommodation is available at:
Fatimas Place: busy, sociable, party atmosphere, not easy to walk to nightlife spots. www.mozambiquebackpackers.com/accomodati...as-place-maputo.html

The Base: Small, helpful and clean place very close to a lot of great Maputo spots. +258 21 302994 Fax : +258 21 300305. Don't be surprised if these contacts don't get a response but do the google and see what other contacts come up.

Maputo backpackers: Just 500m from the (pretty dirty and I wouldn't swim) beach. Nice clean well managed house with aircon. 20 mins by chapa taxi to Maputo central, but plenty go see by just walking along the Marginal. For an extended stay I would choose Maputo backpackers: www.visit-mozambique.com/backpackers/Map...ackpackersLda-2.html

Mozaika Guesthouse: More expensive but a really great place: www.mozaika.co.mz

I would also consider a night at the Catembe Gallery Hotel. Catembe is across the maputo river south and from there you could be able to arrange a day trip to the Maputo elephant reserve which is a beautiful place and you may see the elephants. www.catembe.net

I would spend at least 2 nights in Maputo and then arrange a night at one of the lodges in Macaneta that do transfers from Maputo. Look up: www.jaysbeachlodge.co.za/ and www.tanbiki.co.za/

Also contact www.mozaictravel.com for package tours from Maputo

and I would contact the hotel Polana and ask who they use when clients want tours in and from Maputo: www.serenahotels.com/serenapolana/default-en.html

Oh and don't miss a tour of Maputo looking at Pancho Gueddes and art deco architecture tour and other fascinating tours with Jane Flood: www.aboutime.co.za/index.php/chevrons-and-pyramids/
