Hi,
I have a question, we would like to go from Kruger Park to Tofo. Our journey should be in August 2017.
We would like to cross the border in Giriyondo, than going to Xai Xai - Tofo.
Has anyone experience, if it is possible to do that in a sedan car?
And is it allowed to cross the border in a sedan car?
We will rent a car, we don't want to rent a 4x4, because it is very expensive.
Kind regards
Charly

Hi Charly

August is the middle of the dry season in Moz so a good time to use this route. High clearance non 4x4 vehicles are routinely let through, but the rough gravel and frequent loose rocks on the Moz side make it unsuited to normal sedan cars without risking serious damage. A careful and skillful driver could perhaps make it in a higher sedan such as a Renault Stepway, but I doubt you would allowed through Giriyondo. Note too that in order to use Giryondo you need to spend a night either in Kruger (I like Letaba Restcamp) or in Parque Nacional do Limpopo (I like Aquia Pesqueira or Covane Lodge).

Go well and keep in touch.

Note also that if you do decided to attempt the Giriyondo route in a sedan car, then don't stay at Aguia Pesqueira camp as that route is definitely high clearance only. If leave early from Letaba Restcamp and are turned back at Giriyondo, you can still head south through Kruger and enter Moz at the Lebombo / Ressano Garcia border.

Thanks Mike,
I think it would be better for us to enter Moz at Lebombo/Ressano Garcia border.
Do you think, it is possible to go from Shingwedzi (where we stay in Kruger) to Crocodile Camp in one day? I think, it is, if we start immediately when the gate is open in the morning. This is our alternatif plan. Than early in the next morning from Crocodile Bridge - Ressano Garcia border to Tofo for diving.
We drove years ago from White River to Tofo in one day.
I'm a bit afraid because the traffic at Ressano Garcia border and how long we will need there..

Hi again
Shingwedzi to Crocodile bridge is 306km on the shortest route, so at least 10hrs including a stop for lunch. Gates open 0600 and close 1800 so you have just enough time if you spend the entire day travelling at the permitted tarred road speed of 50kph. I strongly encourage you to stay instead at Letaba Restcamp and then have a more reasonable trip to Crocodile camp.

The Lebombo / Ressano Garcia border is only really congested during the Easter and Christmas periods and on Fridays and Saturdays Moz to SA, with Sundays being busy SA to Moz. Also avoid the 0600 - 0900 morning periods just after the border opens as there can be queues of buses waiting. At other times it should take you no longer than an hour.

A great resource is the DriveMoz page on Facebook so look that up and make use of all the files and services such as online 3rd party insurance and emergency app called Zello.

Boa Viagem

Mike
