Jhb - Pafuri - Inhassoro and return?

Hi Mike

Thanks for a most informative site.

I'm off this Fri 11 Oct from Jhb – Vilankulos/Inhassoro & need to be back in Jhb on Sun 21 Oct night. 9 nights in total.
We (only 2 of us) are driving a Land Cruiser (not towing anything). Our objective is to combine an idyllic beach experience with an adventurous 4x4 bush holiday. We’d like to take in some interesting scenery with challenging 4x4, but ultimately do not want to take too long to get to the Bazarutto Archipelago, where we’d like to spend most of our time.

Our current plan (based on researching your site) is to travel: Pafuri, Mapai, Sao Jorge, Machaila, Banamana (camp here), Mabote and Mapinhane.

Questions:
1. If we can’t make it into Kruger on Fri evening in time (due to Jhb noon departure), where would you stay just outside Pafuri?
2. If we don’t stay in Kruger or LNP, are we still allowed through by paying the R150 p.p. at Pafuri Border?
3. Anyone driving Pafuri – Inhassoro that we could team up with on Saturday 12 Oct?
4. What is the most interesting & time efficient route from Pafuri to Inhassoro?
5. Is it possible to take a more direct route from Pafuri to Inhassoro, without going down to Mapai, i.e. is the Limpopo currently crossable near the Pafuri Border Post, with a road going East? Powerlines route? Where would you camp? How long would this potential option take?
6. Where would you stay for the most idyllic beach experience around Inhassoro/Vilankulos, without breaking the bank?
7. What return route would you recommend?

Thanks
Brem

Hi and apologies for delay in replying:
Questions:
1. If we can’t make it into Kruger on Fri evening in time (due to Jhb noon departure), where would you stay just outside Pafuri?
MIKE: Pafuri River Camp www.pafuri.co.za

2. If we don’t stay in Kruger or LNP, are we still allowed through by paying the R150 p.p. at Pafuri Border?
MIKE: Went through Pafuri 3 weeks ago and nobody asked to see anything except passport and vehicle papers.

3. Anyone driving Pafuri – Inhassoro that we could team up with on Saturday 12 Oct?
MIKE: No problem doing this route alone so long as you drive slowly and ask locals BEFORE getting lost.

4. What is the most interesting & time efficient route from Pafuri to Inhassoro?
MIKE: Most interesting is Pafuri - Mapai - Combomune - Banhine - Zinave - Pande - Inhassoro, most time effiicient is Pafuri - Mapai - Machaila - Mabote - Mapinhane (main road EN.1). Can't have both.

5. Is it possible to take a more direct route from Pafuri to Inhassoro, without going down to Mapai, i.e. is the Limpopo currently crossable near the Pafuri Border Post, with a road going East? Powerlines route? Where would you camp? How long would this potential option take?
MIKE: Yes, but add on a day and bushcamp almost anywhere under the lines as this area has been cleared of landmine.

6. Where would you stay for the most idyllic beach experience around Inhassoro/Vilankulos, without breaking the bank?
MIKE: Don't understand the word idyllic but I like Ilala Palms at Inhassoro and Marimba secret gardens 25km north of Inhassoro sorry that should have read Vilanculos. If you want to dive the best option is Casa Babi and Odyssea Dive in Vilanculos www.odysseadive.com

7. What return route would you recommend?
MIKE: Chongoene (15km N of Xai-Xai) - Chibuto - Guija (Canicado) - Chokwe - Massingir - Giriyondo into Kruger but you would have to say a night either in PNL or KNP.

Go well and let us know all about it, please
Mike
