Moz army overruns Renamo base.

News from my best contact in Gorongosa area:

Just off the phone to Nhambita where I have a friend who has been running "Gorongosa Adventures" for the past 5 years or so. He has been living among the community and his partner and staff are all from the surrounding areas, so his sources of intelligence are first-hand and highly reliable.

Sunday and yesterday (21 October, 2013) he was up on Mount Gorongosa with clients to show them the rain-forest and the birding specials (the main one being the green-headed Oriole), and reports all was calm, and business as usual.

He also told me that when the army (FADM) raided the Renamo base, they found it abandoned, so right now the whereabouts of Dhlakama and his "presidential guard" are unknown.

The attack on Renamo's Satungira (Sandundjira) base, which is on the northern slopes of Mount Gorongosa about 40km from Gorongosa Town (on the Vanduzi road, NOT the main road), is probably long overdue.

The Moz govt has tolerated a renegade army base right in the middle of the country for over a year, from where Dhlakama has been directing guerrilla attacks on road traffic and police stations.

So, while the news may not be great right now, at least the authorities have broken the impasse - negotiations have been unable to to do this mainly due to the fact the Renamo has not been at all interested in dropping ridiculous demands for 'parity' on the elections commission.

So yes much cause for unease during the days to come, and there are fears of "a wave of Renamo retaliation", which I think is an exaggeration based on Renamo's lack of capacity, but perhaps it is best to put any non-essential travel through or to this area on hold for a while.

I read that Renamo attacked some arme vehicles near Tete some days ago and killed one solidier. I guess this is am isolated incidence not ordered from Dahklama. How is the security situation between Beira and Machipanda and in the Gorongosa National Park?

Are negotiations between Renamo and the government still going on in Beira? I could be interested in a hike to Mount Gorongosa. Do you have contact information for Gorongosa Adventures? Is there still a guest house in the town of Gorongosa?

Yes I am aware of this incident and some locals have now left the Angonia (NE of Tete) area and taken refuge in neighbouring Malawi. This remains a very isolated incident in a remote area and has not affected travelers in any way.

My guess is that local so-called Renamo members are using this label as an excuse for robbing innocent local farmers.

No issues have been reported anywhere else in Mozambique so the Beira - Machipanda (border with Zimbabwe near Mutare) road is quiet and uneventful - apart from the numerous coal trucks!

Negotiations with Renamo are continuing and President Nyusi is being very pragmatic and tolerant of the continued ridiculous rantings and ravings from Renamo leader Dhlakama.

In Vila da Gorongosa there is Pousada Azul, but I recommend Pousada Magaço nearby.

Gorongosa Adventures was still operating during December 2014: gorongosa-adventures.blogspot.com/

Go well

Coal trucks? I thougt they were transporting the coal on barges on the Zambezi or by train. What's wrong with Pousada Azul? I had lunch there once and it seemed to be an ok option. Thanks for your information, Mike.

Edit 20.07.15: I have sent a request by e-mail to three adresses to Gorongosa Adventures last saturday. Haven't heard anything yet. I guess they are not operating at the moment...

Hi Peik

No personal problem with Azul - I like the place - but it is perhaps overpriced when compared with Magaço. My info is that Gorongosa Adventures are operational but yes often Sakkie does not respond to emails.

Re the coal trucks. Moz govt would not allow the barges due to environmental concerns, and the trains cannot manage the loads so trucks often used.
