We crossed the Border at October 09, coming from Tanzania, Songea.
We slept at Peramiho at the Guest House of the Benedictine Abbey.
The road to the Border starts near Peramiho at the Road from Songea to Peramiho, the sign is not good to see. The 124 km Gravel Road is in an excellent condition.
At the Border are all facilities you need, Customs and Emmigration.
The Crossing was easy, correct and friendly. At the mozambiquanian side the are also all facilities you need, including CIP for the Car or stamping Carnet.
The only thing is, you only get Single Entry Visas. We got our Multi Entry Visas at Dar at the Embassy, the Guy was so friendly,
to change us some Shilling in Meticais. So we could pay the
Border Crossing Fee in Meticais, what was better than in US$.
After the Border ther's only one parting of the way,
fwe after the Border take the right road and than drive always straight on an also excellent Gravel Road,
until you reach Unango and the Tar Road.
From there you can arrive at Lichinga in a short time,
it took us 8 hrs from Songea to Lichinga.
Attention, theres only one Campsite at Lichinga
and thats a real hell, so we drove on to Marrupa.
The Road between Lichinga and Pemba ist tarred and well populated.
From Marrupa (there's a Campsite)to Montepuez the Road is
in a very bad Condition, its sometimes only a Bush Trail,
about 120 km, you have to cross several wooden bridges,
all in good condition. Here live people in new, but simple huts,
they are as poor as you can't imagine.
We had slept at a swedisch companies Managers Garden
at the Rio Luambala, and after getting Fule at Montepuez,
we headed on to Pemba, to the Bay Diving and Camping,
fomer known as Nacola Jardim.
So we did Songea Pemba in two days.

Wow! Songea to Pemba in 2 days, that is one big trip! I think it is a pity you missed out on Lago Niassa. Thank you very much for taking the trouble to write up a great trip report. Yes one of the advantages of getting a Moz visa at a consulate or embassy is that they do give multiple entry. All border only do the single entry 30 day tourist visa. So Moz visas are issued at the Congresso entry point - still makes me wonder why visas are not issued at the Kilambo / Namoto point at the Rovuma mouth?
I know its tarmac from Lichinga to Marrupa, and when I last did this route there was work at improving the road Marrupa to Balama - how far has the work progressed?
May I have a turn at asking questions?
What was the campingsite in Marrupa like - where is it?
How long did the Marrupa - Montepuez legg take you?
Did you like Pemba dive bush camp (Bay Diving and Camping?) - do they have chalets or is it just camping?
Please ask around Pemba to see whether anyone has managed to use the Unity 1 bridge between Mueda (Moz) and Masasi (Tanz)? The latest info is that it will be officially opened on Nov 30 but perhaps crossing may be allowed before this (I do think it will probably open later than expected).

I am just on the way back from Tansania. My information about the Unity
bridge near Mueda is, that it is opening within the next two weeks!!!
I got this Info from a Guy, who is working in Pemba and live in Dar.
I hope this is true. We are going back to Moz in march.
