I went up to Inhambane last weekend, going through Komatipoort. Firstly, I didn't cross the border at peak times and it's looking much better than a year or 2 ago, so it was really quick.
Going up: I decided to take to gravel road: Ressano Garcia - Moamba - Sabie - Magude - Xinavane - XaiXai - Inhambane. This was my first time using this road and it was an absolute pleasure. I drive a Nissan X-Trail (4x4). The road was a bit wet in places and if you don't have ground clearance you would have struggled. I didn't really use the 4x4. I can imagine in Winter (when it's dry) this road is great.
It took me 8 hours getting from the border to Barra using this road. I've taken the distances between the towns on this road down as well as the time it took me so I can post that as well if wanted. But the best thing about this road: even though you can't drive fast there is almost no traffic, you skip Maputu, you skip all the small towns, there's not so many people/pedestrians on the road (almost none).
The road after Xai-Xai has been almost completed and looks excellent. There's just about 5km left which only 1 lane is open.
Coming back I decided to take the main road (EN1), mainly because it rained during the weekend and the gravel road could be very difficult if really wet. Coming back took me 7h30min to get to the border. In other words it saved me half an hour. I believe it might be a bit longer (in distance) but much more traffic, pedestrians, cops, etc.
When I go again I will definitely (weather permitting) use the gravel road going up and down.
Hope this helps someone!

The Moamba turn-off is just after the first toll gate in Moz, about 37km from Ressano Garcia. Drive into Moamba and turn right onto road to Xinavane / Sabie, then just out of town you will see the left turn to the bridge over the Incomati.

I just joined the forum - I got a casa in Bilene and travel up there about 8 times per year (more if I can,in fact,...would live there if I could!)
I've always taken the Maputo route, which by the way is improving due to the road upgrade but.... here's the question: how do you rate the MOAMBA route towing a 5m RIB inflatable boat - do-able? or am I just gona ruin the boat & trailer?
