l want to make the trip to Maputo to pick up a vehicle and hopefully meet up with some old friends. ln all l expect to be there for a week or two but depending on problems clearing the vehicle and whether my friends are available it could be much shorter than this.

l would like to get the following information before planning, at this point have not committed to shipping it through Mozambique or other ports.

1. How long does it take to get a visa and what is the cost?
2. What are the visa requirements?
3. ls it possible to get a visa at the border or on arrival in Mozambique?
4. ls there a safe, reliable bus from Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare or other city which goes through to Maputo or to Beira.
5. What is the length of the trip if one takes a bus from the border to Beira or Border to Maputo.
6. ls it possible to clear the car by yourself or you will need an agent to do so?
7. If an agent is needed how much will that cost?
8. How long will the whole process take to get all the steps and documentation completed?
9. Is it possible to get a police clearance so as to avoid trouble on the way back?
10. How long does the process of clearing a car take once at the border?
11. In Maputo, what is the average price of a hotel room, l am assuming a 3star per night?
12. What is the average price for meals in Maputo?
13. Any other things a foreigner like myself would need to know before taking the trip to MoazambiqueMozambique ?

Thanks in advance, l am sorry for so many questions but l just want to be as thorough as possible.

Hi there

sorry for the delayed reply. I missed this one. Short answers to questions below:

1. How long does it take to get a visa and what is the cost?
MIKE: At consulate in Harare same day, but can be 2 or 3 days at other consulates eg in Dar es Salaam. At border should take about 30 minutes depending on how enthusiastic the immigration official is to attend to you. Consulate visa charge can vary from $50 - $100.

2. What are the visa requirements?
MIKE: At consulates you may need two passport photos and a copy of passport. You will need proof of a booking at a lodge, campsite or hotel in Mozambique. At the border you need your passport and maybe a proof of accommodation - not always asked for.

3. ls it possible to get a visa at the border or on arrival in Mozambique?
MIKE: Yes. The law that if you have a consulate in your home country you must get one there, has changed. Sometimes the border official may not know (or pretend not to know) this.

4. ls there a safe, reliable bus from Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare or other city which goes through to Maputo or to Beira.
MIKE: No. Just take you chance with buses locals recommend. There used to be a passenger train Harare to Mutare, not sure now so do the Google/

5. What is the length of the trip if one takes a bus from the border to Beira or Border to Maputo.
MIKE: Mutare to Beira one day. Mutare to Maputo 2-3 days.

6. ls it possible to clear the car by yourself or you will need an agent to do so?
7. If an agent is needed how much will that cost?
8. How long will the whole process take to get all the steps and documentation completed?
9. Is it possible to get a police clearance so as to avoid trouble on the way back?
10. How long does the process of clearing a car take once at the border?

6-10 MIKE: No experience of these. Ask on the DriveMoz or Mozambique For all Facebook pages.
11. In Maputo, what is the average price of a hotel room, l am assuming a 3star per night?
MIKE: $100 plus
12. What is the average price for meals in Maputo?
MIKE: At restaurant frequented by locals $10 - $20. Those aimed at expates $20 - $50.

13. Any other things a foreigner like myself would need to know before taking the trip to MoazambiqueMozambique ?
MIKE: So many things. Main one is to consult doctor for malaria prophylaxix. If Driving then join the DriveMoz page on Facebook. Otherwise search this forum for terms such as "visas", "safety", "money", etc

Go well

Mike
