Hi Mike,

First of all thanks for the great site, this really helps out a lot with planning our trip to Mozambique.
Currently we are in Blantyre, Malawi. We are going to visit a friend in Tofo so we need to get to the southern part of Mozambique from here. Our plan is to take the bus from Blantyre to Mwanza as early as possible (hopefully around 6am) and than cross the border to Zobue from where we hope to catch a minibus to Tete.
Since we've read many stories about overpriced and terrible accomodation in Tete we would prefer to travel onwards the same day to Chimoio. However the information we can find on this trip is in general very old and contradicting. Do you know if there are any buses in the afternoon going from Tete to Chimoio? If not, do you know what would be the best options for us to stay (as cheap as possible) in Tete before going on to Chimoio the next day, preferably close to the bus station?
Any help would be very much appreciated!

Hi

There are buses direct Blantyre to Tete but yes the best option is to take whatever transport is leaving first for Tete and get to the Mwanza / Zobue border as early as possible.

It is a long way from Tete to Chimoio, but depending on the time that you reach Tete you may be able to make it.

Otherwise in Tete I think Kassuende is cheapest, but first look at Paraiso Miserioso, Complexo Pisinca and Sundowners. The last 3 near each other just downstream of the bridge.

Hi

sorry, forgot to say that no regular afternoon buses or chapas Tete to Chimoio (380km) but ask around for Transport Chimoio and the locals may be able to point you in the direction of a vehicle heading that way. You will be expected to pay, about MT500 per person is reasonable.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the help. We ended up leaving a bit later from Blantyre with a direct bus to Tete (the ZUPCO bus to Harare), since as you said there were no busses from Tete to Chimoio in the afternoon. We stayed in Paraiso Miserioso for 750mtc pp, which was compared to other places in Tete very reasonable and took the morning bus to Chimoio (from where I'm writing this).
So once again, thank you!!

Hi Tom & Sanne

thanks for the feedback - very useful info!

Good to hear that Paraiso is OK - was the pool working? Please let us know what it cost Blantyre to Tete and Tete to Chimoio. Where are you staying in Chimoio?

Enjoy the rest of your stay in Moz and any more queries please ask.

I think the pool was working, however we did not use it so I'm not completely sure.
From Blantyre to Tete we paid 5000 kwacha, the ZUPCO bus leaves 3 times a week at 8am and takes a bit longer than the minibusses but is a bit less of a hassle I guess. It drops you off right across the bridge in Tete (so in front of Sundowners). The bus from Tete to Chimoio cost us 400 mtc and left Tete at 4:30am. We arrived at Chimoio around 11am. Here we're staying at the Pink Papaya backpackers hostel (a nice place with a fully equiped kitchen, we stay in the dorm for 400mtc).
Now we rest for one day and tomorrow we take the chapa to Inchope from where we catch the Intercape bus to Vilankulos!

Cheers
