Should I use convoys or are their alternatives?

NOTE THAT THERE ARE 8 (OR MORE) PAGES ON THIS TOPIC. SEE BUTTONS ABOVE RIGHT AND BELOW RIGHT.

Two to three years ago there were frequent attacks (for which Renamo claimed responsibility) between the Save River bridge and Muxungue on the EN.1. This stretch is one hundred to three hundred kilometers north of the main tourism destinations of the south and a thousand kilometers from the northern tourism areas.

The attacks restarted last week (11, 12 Feb,2016) and the armed convoys have been reinstated. Note that in previous years these convoys did not deter the attacks between Save and Muxungue.

In line with its threat to control vehicle traffic along other parts of the EN.1 (and the EN.3), yesterday (Feb 17, 2016) 70km south of Caia (and the Zambezi River), on the EN.1, a truck belonging to Servitrade was attacked and burned and the driver killed.

Security along main roads in Mozambique's Sofala province is currently very fluid and uncertain and my advice is to avoid driving the above routes until further notice.

Meanwhile places south of the Save River and north of the Zambezi River (the vast majority of Mozambique) remain peaceful and welcoming to visitors.

I see that the armed convoys are being attacked and that a new escorted stretch of the EN.1 south of Caia has been introduced:

Hi Mike,
I have a few friends that are planning on flying in to Beira and then driving up to the Zambezi River mouth on a birding expedition. What route do you recommend at the moment, considering the rebel activity near Caia?

Hi and welcome to Mozguide.

When is the trip and will they be in a proper 4x4 vehicle. If the trip is during the dry season (April to November), i would most certainly go Dondo - Inhaminga - Caia. This unpaved route is in fair condition ( sandy and rutted in places) has seen some bandit activity in recent months, so no guarantees there, but it avoids the delays and frustrations of the Nhamapaza (118km north of Vila Gorongosa on the EN.1) to Caia convoys and terrible surface of the Dondo - Inchope stretch and also the fast deteriorating Inchope - Gorongosa - Caia road. No better place to stay in the Caia area than Mphingwe Camp 32km south of Caia which is a favoured birding spot too.

Go well

There have been no reports of attacks along any of Mozambique's roads over the past week. Holding thumbs!

Hi Mike,
we just planning a trip to Mozambique in September 2016.
Two weeks ago I read in my german newspaper about Renamo activities in Mueda, Manica and Sofala.
Do you know about it ?
What do you think about the situation ? :(
