Mozambique: Unity Bridge to Be Delivered On 30 November
17 August 2009
Maputo — The bridge over the Rovuma River, also "Unity Bridge", linking Mozambique and Tanzania by road will be delivered on November 30, reports Monday's issue of the daily paper "Noticias". .
The governor of the northern province of Cabo Delgado, Eliseu Machava, visited the construction site last Tuesday and was told by both Mozambican and Tanzanian teams working on the ground, and by the contractor "China Geo-Engineering Corporation", that the construction of the bridge has entered its final phase.
The last stage involves pouring concrete on the last plate of the bridge that is expected to be competed by the end of this month.
The construction of the 'Unity Bridge' began in October 2005, and it ought to have been concluded by November 2008.
Last year, the contractor justified the delay saying the project needed to be redesigned because a sub-contractor had imported inadequate materials.
The bridge will be 720 metres long and 13.5 metres wide, and is budgeted at 25 million US dollars.
This will be the first bridge crossing between Tanzania and Mozambique, and it is believed that it will improve considerably economic trade between the two countries.
The bridge will also boost development in Cabo Delgado, and the Mtwara region in Tanzania, as well as in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
MIKE: Of course this is not first bridge over the Rovuma - the one up at Congresso in Niassa Province between Lichinga and Songea has been open for 18 months. My own opinion is that you should not expect to be able to use the Negomano bridge until early 2010, but I might give it a go early Dec 09.
