Hi,

Is the EN1 navigable from Inhambane up to Tete in the Dec/ Jan timeframe? What are the road conditions like? Would a Subaru Forester be able to make a journey like this without being U/S at the end of the trip, hence the EN1 all the way. I think I'm more concerned about the clearance than anything else.

We are planning on going to Lake Malawi via Harare and returning via the Moz route through to Giryondo.

Cheers, Mark

Hi Mark

People are doing your route in ordinary sedans all of the time - and people in 4x4's are losing tyres and rims if they drive too fast on the potholed sections. So a Forester is good, but keep the speed down, even on the very good sections there are pedestrians, cops with radar, kids on their big brother's bicycle who wobble all over the place, livestock, drunks, logging trucks, taxis etc.

roadworks north of Xai-Xai for about 70km and also north of Massinga for 70km then Pambarra - Save also badly potholed so on these stretches expect 30kph and others 80kph averages and you will be fine. Also 30km of gravel after the Pungoe river going north to Changara.

Thanks for the detailed feedback Mike, valuable input as always.

No problems with bridges or river crossings on that route?

cheers, mark

Nope. Most of it is in excellent condition - good for 120kph but do not exceed the 100kph limit and keep a very wary eye ahead of you for the previously mentioned hazards.
