Ruvuma River Crossing

We are planning a trip through Mozambique and would like to know how we can cross the Ruvuma River. We know the ferry has sunk and we are not sure if the bridge is already finished.

We also would like to know if there is a river crossing for vehicles between Candulo and Camba in Niassa National Park.

Thanks,

Hi Stephan

This has been quite a popular question so I will summarise my previous answers. For full details use the search link above right and use words such as Rovuma, Rovuma Ferry, Negomano, Congresso in your search.

Right now there are two crossing points over the Rovuma river between Moz and Tanzania (and of course vice versa):
1) In NW Moz (Niassa Prov) there is a bridge at Congresso (Lupilichi)/ Mitomoni - not on most maps - but the route is Lichinga - Unango - Sanga - Congresso - Mitomoni - Songea.

2) Using the home-made boat barge at the mouth of the Rovuma (Namoto / Kilambo) that is put together quite regularly by an enterprising group of locals whenever someone asks. They ask between US$200 - 300 but most folks negotiate that down to $250. A quite risky but very adventurous way of crossing.

According to reports the Unity (Umoja) bridge at Negomano / Mtambaswala 'should' be complete by the end of November but I would add on another month or two. This route goes up the coast then turns inland to Mueda - Negomano - Rovuma crossing to Tanz - Mtambaswala - Masasi - Lindi.

When do you intend to travel? Even with all the bridges open, access roads are often blocked by floods and wash-aways between December and April each year.

Now do the search and let me know if anything is still not clear.

Apologies, forgot to say that at Chamba (been there and no one knew of a place called Candulo so maps are incorrect) there is only crossing by dugout, also road to Chamba on Moz side is disused and overgrown (think the Exploration Society of SA www.explorationsociety.org may have been last to use it.
