Last night I started a reply to a post regarding a couple who needed assistance regarding the best route and reasonable accommodation between Vilanculos and Malawi. This morning I searched here for the post and it has vanished. So perhaps I inadvertently deleted it.
If this was your post here is what I remember:
You were staying at Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge after Vilanculos. So unless there is a ceasefire, you will need to brave to armed convoys to get to Malawi. So depart Vilanculos at 0530 to get to the Save river by 0830 to catch the 0900 convoy heading north. There is a second north-bound convoy at 1500, but be there 1430. You will be in Gorongosa by lunchtime.
From Gorongosa I would not go to Malawi via Tete, but rather carry on northwards on the EN.1 and stay a night or two at a delightful lodge in the middle of a huge indigenous forest called Mphingwe Lodge . Really special spot and popular with travelers and birders so book well in advance. Mphingwe is 32km south of Caia, so not a big journey from Gorongosa Park, but to catch the Nhamapaza - Caia 0800 convoy you will have to leave Chitengo at 0500.
The Park gate usually opens at 0600 so an option is to leave the Park in the afternoon and to stay a night either at Gorongosa Adventures or just south of Vila Gorongosa (Gorongosa Town) at a new little Inn called Kapulana Gorongosa which is clean, has friendly management, wifi, tv, hot shower, comfy bed, cold beer andcosts 2500mts for 2 people sharing including breakfast. They also do good basic dinners and lunches. In this way you will be able to leave early enough to catch the convoy. Gorongosa Adventures need warning that you will be coming and Kapulana is very popular to be sure to book in advance.
You could also skip Mphingwe (a great shame, but perhaps you are in a hurry to get to Malawi), and head on to Mocuba where there is a nice guesthouse called Venus. Tel no is (+258) 24810049 and prices vary between MT2800 meticais to MT3200 pp. As you enter Mocuba from Nicoadala jsut after the junction to Milange and Malawi look for the first petrol station on your left. Venus Guest House is on the left immediately past this.
Next day you take the road to Milange (Melosa) / Mulanje border. Mostly brand new tarmac but still about 60km rough sand and gravel so high clearance vehicle, 4x4 ideally needed. If you depart Mocuba at 0700 you should make it to the border by 1100. Then good tarmac to Blantyre so you could be at Cape Maclear same day.
If you did post this question, apologies, but not sure how it disappeared. Hope this helps.
