We are planning to travel from Malawi to Mozambique in mid-July. We will be departing Likoma on the ferry MV Ilala. Since the border closes at 1800, the ferry isn't scheduled to arrive Monkey Bay until 1330, the ferry is often late, and the road trip takes several hours, we have decided to disembark at Makanjira (where the ferry supposedly arrives at 0830) so that we have all day to make it across the border. I read in one of your old blog posts that the road from the border to Cuamba was quite rough. We will have 4x4. ByJuly will most of the mud be dried? Any estimate on how long the drive will take or any other advice about the roads on either side or the border itself? Thanks for a great site!
The Mandimba border is usually quite an easy crossing. Yes by July the Mandimba - Cuamba road is usually dry. Hopefully it will be graded otherwise the mud will turn into hard ruts that will still be be slow going. So expect 3-4 hours of rough driving.
