Hi Mike, I discovered you incredibly nice site while organizing my visit to Mozambique in the second half of August, and I think you can easily help me with my plan.
I will have 2 weeks entering from Malawi (Cobué) and moving by public transport. The basic idea would be to visit Ihla and Ibo, then fly Pemba to Maputo with LAM, and possibly put in one single day in Tofo for diving. Timeframe is 15 August (Cobuè) to 29 August (return flight from Maputo). I think that, starting from Cobuè, it's possible to visit both Ihla and Ibo, and then be in Pemba, in 10 days (15. Cobuè. 16 Lichinga. 17. Cuamba. 18 train to Nampula. 19. to Ihla. 20 Ihla. 21. Ihla to Pemba. 22. To Ibo. 23. Ibo. 24. Back to Pemba).
Then I could maybe fly to Maputo on 25th August, then go to Tofo (26), dive (27), then back to Maputo (28) and fly (29).
I would fly to Maputo by the 27th anyway, because I want to be sure not to lose my connection, just in case LAM cancels the flight from Pemba.
Is it possible to do all these things? Or could I think of skipping Ibo, just because I visit the other historical island of Ihla? Otherwise, I'll just forget about Tofo and take a couple of days more in the North.
I thank you very much for any suggestion! Can't wait to visit the country.

I apologies for the slow reply. See my responses to your queries below:
I will have 2 weeks entering from Malawi (Cobué) and moving by public transport.
MIKE: There are trucks and other vehicles leaving every other day Cobue to Lichinga, but you may be delayed a day in Cobue. Visas are issued in Cobue - should be no more than $50.
The basic idea would be to visit Ihla and Ibo,
MIKE: From Lichinga, whether you go via Mandimba and Cuamba, or via Marrupa and Montepuez, getting to Pemba is 2 days. It does not make sense to visit Ibo and Ilha without spending at least 2 days at each place. It will take you a day to get to Ibo and a day back. Look baobibo backpackers. From Pemba to Ilha is half a day - look up www.ilhablue.com So by now you could already be in Mozambique for 9 or 10 days.
then fly Pemba to Maputo with LAM,
MIKE: It perhaps makes more sense to fly Nampula to Maputo, as Nampula is much closer to Ilha.
and possibly put in one single day in Tofo for diving.
MIKE: Possible, but on local public transport it will take around 8hrs Maputo to Tofo, so yes you could have a day there and take a bus back to Maputo next day.
MIKE: In short your itinerary is very ambitious and would make a lot of sense to try to fly Lichinga to Pemba if you can afford it.
I do not think that you should try to fit in a day at Tofo. I would far rather spend more time on Ibo and Ilha.
Go well and tell us all about it.
