Zambezi river road from Tete to Caia

Bom dia !
I am preparing from Europe our next trip in May in a couple of weeks
We will arrive from Caborra Bassa Dam to Tete and we would like to go to Catapu and then Gorongoza NP
I know that there are several options. One of them is really appealing to us because it looks to follow the Zambeze river :
Tete to Tambara - Chiramba - Sena - Caia following the Zambezi river and then Catapu
I don't know if this is doable, especially at the end of May ? Is it possible to bushcamp or do you know camp where we can stop ? I have heard about Mozanaf Safari Camp but don't have recent infos?
If this road is too rough, can you advice us the best way to reach Caia from Tete and where to stop ? Tandikwe camp could be an option ?
Thank you in advance

Nice to hear from you and I apologize for the delay in replying.
Yes your route is possible as the rains in this area have ended and the roads have mostly dried out. I have no further news on Mozunaf. There is www.tandikwe.com/tandikwe-bush-camp/4578994843 which I have stayed at, but not really on your route.
Regarding bush camping, do some research on the Massangano Iringa and citadel that I visited in 2007. Also a detour from your route, but a very scenic drive and a fascinating place. See: www.leisurewheels.co.za/4x4-news/3-count...-lost-cities-part-2/
And of course Mphingwe Lodge at Catapu is fantastic!
Go well and trip reports attract excellent Karma!

Thank you so much for your advices
The problem is that you have excited my curiosity and now I want to go to Massangano
I have read the trip report you showed me but I haven't got good maps and Google Maps or othersdoesn't know Massangano !
My english is not fluent, so if I prefer you to confirm :
To get to Massangano, I have to go to Mungari and find the road that goes north to Mandié. Then we should follow a track to the east along the Luenha river, till finding the Zambezi where we should reach Massangano. Am I right ?
After there, I suppose that the only way to get to Tambara is to backtrack to Mandie and Manguri ?
I am glad that you confirm that Mphingwe in Catapu is a good place as I have already planned to stay there !
From Catapu, I need again your advice : what would be the shortest way (in time) to get to Ndzou Lodge at Morrumbe Forest ?
- the eastern route R213 + EN6
- or the western route passing along Gorongosa even if we won't go to the NP. Maybe visit the Morrombedze Falls if we can camp not too far away ? Don't know if it worth it ?
As you can see, more and more questions, sorry Mike

Yes your description of the route to Massangano is correct, and yes you will need to backtrack to Mungari. Gorongosa National Park do offer guided visits to the Morrombodze falls and coffee plantation, but most of Monte Gorongosa is still under the control of Renamo and the recent death of their leader, Afonso Dhlakama, has left the situation even more unpredictable. You will not be able to free-camp nearby, and the only formal camping is at Chitengo in the Parque Nacional da Gorongosa.
There is a rustic, and perhaps quite run-down informal campsite known as Gorongosa Adventures on the rhs a few kilometres towards Chitengo from the main road, and I suggest that you contact the owner Piet van Zyl South Africa: + 27 82 875 5656, Mozambique + 258 82 957 1436 to find out the latest status.
To get to Ndzou, the quickest may be the 213 and EN6, but the best people to ask will be Mphingwe Lodge. Another route could be to carry on south along the EN.1 then turn off to Maringue and then Macossa and join the EN.102 and carry on south to the EN.6.

Thank you Mike for your confirmation, I can plan my itinerary now !
Yes, I heard the news about the leader of Renamo and I have to admit that I am quite worried about the evolution of the situation. Especially because the main area of the recent conflict was in Central Mozambique where we intend to travel ... Maybe you know newspaper online that we could check to have news about the situation as far as we go .
But, first of all, I hope that the peace negociation will still process to the good way for the country and the inhabitants.
For Ndzou route, I will aswell ask for MPhingwe, but I am always happy to have your advices. I think we will try to take the fastest way.
Last question, if we have to stay in Tete, I think we will go to Jesus e bom campsite, that we already know but if you know a better place in the city or around, I am still interested !
For the trip, we we'll buy a SIM card mainly for internet access and SMS, as I don't speak portuguese . Which cell is the best in these areas MTN or Vodacom ?
Have a good day !

For camping in or near Tete, I only know Jesus e Bom. For travelers in Mozambique there is no single cellphone network that works best. I carry two cellphones, one with a Vodacom sim which is best for most urban areas, and the other with a Movitel sim which is best for most rural areas.
The telephone numbers I have for Jesus e Bom are the following, but note these people are not always in Tete, or in Mozambique and so may not reply or respond:
Johan: +258 84 522 5844
Willie: +258 84 304 6338.
