Hi Mike,

We are Gerard and Judit from Barcelona, thanks for the previous response. We decide to stay some days in Kruger and spend the rest of the time around the North, traveking by public transport (flights, buses, train,...). We would like to know your thought about our planning and suggestion you may have.

- Maputo-Kruger: A day exploring Maputo. Transfer by bus from Maputo to Melelane and rent a car for self-diving in Kruger (4 days). Return to Maputo for another day before going to the north. Mike do you know what time the buses departs from Maputo and Melelane? Any suggestion for renting a car in Kruger?

- Niassa Lake: Flight to Lichinga and transfer to the southest part of the Lake (Cape Maclear - 3 days). We couldn't find much information to go to Cape Maclear from Lichinga. If we land at 10am to Lichinga, is it posible to arrive at Cape Maclear by the same day, or better to stay a day in Lichinga before going to the Lake? There are busses from Lichinga crossing the border?

- Cuamba and Gurue: Transfer from Malawi to Cuamba. This together with Lichinga-Cape Maclear are the more difficult journeys to plan. Mike could give as advice on that? Once in Cuamba or plan is to do some trekking (2-3 days) in Gurué. But we are not sure if going up to the Namuli as we must wear a camp tend didn't we? or is there accomodation at the base camp?

- Train from Cuamba to Nampula and Illa do Mozambique: We've read about this train journey and it seems apassionating yet exausting. Should we buy the tikets in Cuamba in advance or the same day? We are planning to stay 2-3 nights in Illa do Moz and go up to Quirimbas.

- Once in Quirimbas thought to stay one day in Pemba and 3 days in Ibo for diving and relaxing before flying back to Maputo from Pemba.

Sorry for this long post...we would be greatfull to know your expert and local thoughts about our plan. Any suggestion will be more than wellcome.

Thank you so much!

Gerard and Judit

Hi Gerard and Judit
Quite a lot to advise you about, but I will try my best.

See my replies after your questions:

Maputo-Kruger: A day exploring Maputo. Transfer by bus from Maputo to Melelane and rent a car for self-diving in Kruger (4 days).
MIKE: It will be probably be complicated to rent a car from Malelane, so perhaps better to rent from Nelspruit. I have no info other than that Malelane is a small town, and Nelspruit is a city with the Kruger International Airport nearby so rentals certainly available.

Return to Maputo for another day before going to the north. Mike do you know what time the buses departs from Maputo and Melelane? Any suggestion for renting a car in Kruger?
MIKE: Depends which buses you are intending to use. For mainline buses such as Intercape and Greyhound, look up their websites. Or for minibuses go to the Maputo station or to Avenida Alberto Luthuli near to the station. For Kruger rentals here is a list: www.kmiairport.co.za/car-rentals.html

MIKE: The reason that you cannot find much info on this route, is that it is very difficult to travel from Lichinga to Malawi, is that the road from Liching to Mandimba is mostly in very bad condition and quickly becomes impassable in rain, even for a 4x4 vehicle. There is public transport on this route, but unreliable and rough. Count on a day to Mandimba at the border and then another half day to Cape Maclear. My advice is that you are being far to ambitious to try and include Malawi in your itinerary. Otherwise fly to Tete as the road from there to Malawi is in great condition. but still a complicated and time-consuming trip.

MIKE: Wow, you really are aiming at the most difficult and complicated itinerary. It will be two days trip via public transport from Cape Maclear to Gurue and then to organize a hike up Monte Namuli is also not easy. For advice you could look up www.facebook.com/pg/Pensao.Gurue.Mozambique/about/

MIKE: The train is not too bad if you buy the most expensive (Primeira class) tickets. Nampula to cuamba - every tuesdays and saturdays
Cuamba to nampula - every thursdays and sundays, and yes you must buy the tickets one day in advance at the Station. More info and nice place to stay at www.facebook.com/RubyBackpackers/

- Once in Quirimbas thought to stay one day in Pemba and 3 days in Ibo for diving and relaxing before flying back to Maputo from Pemba.
MIKE: A good plan. For good advice on how to get to Ibo and where to stay look up: www.facebook.com/BaobiboCasaDeHospedes/ and www.facebook.com/pembamagic/

Sorry for this long post...we would be greatfull to know your expert and local thoughts about our plan. Any suggestion will be more than wellcome.
MIKE: to summarize, I would skip Malawi and Gurue and spend an extra few days in Kruger and on Ibo.

Go well.

Mike
