Where to sleep between Pafuri and vilanculos

Hello,

I want to drive with my family (5 people) from Pafuri to Vilanculos in August 2019.
I don't have any camping equipment.
I see that I could have a first night in Dumela Wilderness Safaris. Do you know if they provide tents or hut to sleep ?
Then I heard where is a campsit in Machaila. Do you know a way to contact them. Can we sleep there without any camping equipment ?
If no what are the other possibilities ?

Many thanks in advance for your reply.

Hi Vincent and welcome to Mozguide.

Yes, Dumela Wilderness does have fixed tents with beds and other furniture. Very nice communal ablutions too. www.pafurimoz.co.za What some folk do is to stay over at Dumela, and then depart at 0400 the following morning. The drive via Machaila to Vilanculos is 12 - 13 hrs at sensible speeds and assuming no wrong turns or flat tyres etc.

Currently between Pafuri and the coast the only proper accommodation is in the Banhine National Park. At the HQ near Chai Village, the old Fish Eagle Camp has been renovated and there are safari-style tents with beds and bedding and ablutions.

I have not been to Banhine for two years, so I don't know if the facilities have been maintained, so cannot guarantee the condition. Here is the location, but the description is out of date: tracks4africa.co.za/listings/item/w145520/banhine-campsite/

Great route, but never a good idea to rush anywhere in Africa.

Thanks a lot Mike for your advice.
The camp in Banhine doesn't seem to exist annymore.
Is it possible to go from Giriyondo to Vilanculos directly and what is the best road with a stop in the middle for a night?
thanks

Hi Vincent

Two years ago when I stayed at the Banhine Camp it had just been renovated and was quite comfortable with decent beds, bedding and linen. Ablutions were basic but functional and clean. My guess is that the camp would still be OK. Where did you get your information that the camp is not operating?

Giriyondo to Vilanculos is about ten hours. The border opens at 8am so you will probably on be through by 9. You will not make Vilanculos before dark so either stay at Covane Lodge which has chalets or at Sunset Beach Lodge or East africa safaris near Chidenguele.

The best route from Giriyondo is Massingir - Chokwe - cross Limpopo River - Guija (Canicado) - Chibuto - Chongoene which is 10km north of Xai-Xai on the main road EN.1

Hi Mike,

thanks again for your help.
Regarding the Banhine camp, I read in a guide book that there was no camp anymore in the banhine park. I tried to find also a website or contact data and I found nothing. Maybe you can help me ? I don't know how to contact them.

For Vilanculos, there isn't a more direct road?

Hi Vincent

I can confirm that the Banhine Camp is definately open for visitors. Difficult to impossible to make a booking, but if requested I will attempt to notify the camp of your, or anyone else who may be going this way, arrival.

The most direct route from Pafuri to Vilanculos is via Mapai, Machaila and Mabote. As this route is most used and follows the least likely to food areas, it is also the "quickest".

Not quicker, but with more accommodation options is Pafuri - Mapai - Combomune - Mabalane - Guija (Canicado) - Chibuto - Chongoene (10km north of Xai - Xai). Accommodation in Chokwe and various places in the Xai-Xai / Chidenguele area. I like East Africa Safaris or Sunset Beach Lodge.

My regards

Mike
