Kruger to Vilanculos

Hi Mike,

My partner and I are planning to visit Mozambique for the second half of August 2019.
We'd like to drive from Kruger to Vilanculos with a small 4x4 if possible, you mentioned this is not recommended...does that apply from both Pafuri and Giriyondo? I imagine the road from Pafuri is better.

Also is getting a visa at these border posts a problem with European passports?

We will also not bring camping equipment, so would need to stay in lodges. Is this possible on both routes?

Thanks very much,

Dan

Hi Dan
Visas are issued at the Pafuri and at the Giriyondo border for $50 or ZAR750 cash only.

Note that to use Giriyondo you must overnight either in Kruger Park or in the Limpopo Park. Covane Lodge qualifies for this. This regulation is not enforced for Pafuri border.

What 4x4 will you be using? If it is one of the SUV types then my answer will usually be I do not recommend the Pafuri route. However, at present the Giriyondo route is suitable for all higher clearance vehicles and most SUV's.

For those not equipped to camp there are three accommodation options with tents or rooms with beds and bedding on the Pafuri to Vilanculos route:

Dumela Wilderness Safaris:. www.pafurimoz.co.za

Casa B├║falo Mapai:
zambezi.ws/casa-bufalo/

Fish Eagle Camp, Banhine National Park HQ:

www.anac.gov.mz/en/parques/banhine/

I stayed at all three during a trip three weeks ago.

On the Giriyondo route there is Covane Community Lodge www.covanecommunitylodge.com . From here you can get to the coastal area via Chokwe, Guija, Chibuto and Chongoene (on the EN.1 main Road.)

Go well

Mike

Hi Mike,

In your opinion does a Nissan X-trail have high enough clearance for the Pafuri to Vilanculos route?
Our other option would be a Toyota Hilux 4x4

Thank you,

Dan

Hi Dan

No, definately not. I drove this route in a Honda CRV when the roads were mostly in better condition than now and it was a nightmare of driving at walking pace for long distances and constant scrapes and bashes underneath.

Use the hilux and your trip will be easy and relaxing.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your advice a month ago.
We've booked to stay at the camp at Banhine Reserve on 18 August 2019.
Do you advise using a GPS to find it, or is it possible without?
Also is it possible to buy food and refuel in Mapai on the way, or better to do this on the SA side of the border before Pafuri?
More or less how many hours drive is it from Banhine rest camp (Chai Village) to Vilanculos, we have a Hilux 4x4 bakkie.

Much appreciated, as always

Dan
