Hi Mike,

Thanks for an informative site. I am planning to go to Morrungulo in Dec 2019, more exact, 23rd. I have done research on the route, but there seems to be multiple Limpopo crossings available from Pafuri. Two questions, is the river still crossable in Dec, and secondly, is Mapai the best crossing. We are a party of 4, travelling in one 4x4 3.2 Ford Ranger and towing a 4x4 trailer.

Looking forward to your reply.

Regards
Jaco

Hi Jaco
Welcome to Mozguide.
With a trailer I would use the conventional Pafuri - Mapai (Limpopo crossing) - Mapai (Railway) - Machaila (basic campsite) - Mabote - Mapinhane (on EN1) then South to Morrungulo.

The other Limpopo crossing points are heavy sand and then you also have to cross the Nwanezi (Nuanetsi) River as well.

The summer rains usually start getting heavy by the start of December in the Limpopo basin, so usually by mid December the track between Pafuri and Mapai and the crossing can be impassable.

There is a homemade vehicle barge at Mapai, but this does not operate when the Limpopo is rising fast and of course the track may be flooded anyway.

So really no way to know whether this route will be doable until a few days before you depart.

Great place to stay and an excellent source of info and assistance are Lourens (senior) and Sonja Jooste have Dumela Wilderness Safaris 8km into Mozambique from Pafuri border. Www.pafurimoz.co.za

Morning Mike,

Thanks for the quick and informative reply. I am also a bit concerned wrt the rain and how it may affect my route plans. We are staying in KNP Punda Maria first night. I guess I should perhaps try to change my reservation closer to Giriyondo in KNP, that way should the rains cause me to change routes, I will be able to go via Giriyondo in stead of Pafuri.
Your info is always appreciated.

Enjoy
Jaco

Hi Jaco

Yes always good to have a plan B in place when planning on using the Pafuri route from December to May.

NOTE that Pafuri border hours are 0800 - 1600 all year while Giriyondo summer (1 Oct - 31 March) hours are 0800 - 1600 and winter (1 April - 30 Sept) 0800 - 1500.

Go well

Mike
