Is the New Giriyondo border post open?

Here are the questions that I sent to Raymond Travers, Media Relations, Kruger National Park:

Hi once again Raymond

Just wondering what the latest on Giriyondo is. I got to the post from the Moz side in September and it seemed close to completion.

If it is open (or once it is open, whatever the case may be), what conditions will there be for travellers wishing to use it?

Will there be restrictions on commercial or public transport? Will travellers have to overnight in Kruger?

What are the conditions for entry into the Parque Nacional do Limpopo from Giriyondo?

Is or will Mozambique 3rd party insurance be available at Giriyondo? What are or will the border hours be?

Thanks again

Mike

By the way, the Giriyondo post is reached by entering Kruger Park from Pafuri and basically heading east to the Mozambique border. The new Limpopo Park on the moz side has some gravelled roads, not much game yet, but is a great wilderness experience.

Here are the replies that Raymond sent me:
Hi Mike

Many thanks for your email.
To answer your questions as far as I can:
* It has not yet officially been opened. We also do not have a date yet as to when exactly this will take place.
* I am not sure of any conditions for use. People entering the KNP will have to use a Wild Card or pay our daily conservation fees. I understand that there might be a restriction on trailers/boats/caravans on the Mozambican side, but I am not sure of this. Please contact the Mozambicans in this regard.
* It will be a tourism border gate only.
* We might bring in the restriction that people have to stay at least one night in Kruger before travelling through, but this is has not been decided yet.
* Please contact the Mozambicans for any info regarding the operation in Mozambique (I cannot speak on their behalf).
* Border hours will be from 09:00 until 16:00.

Hope this answers your questions. For information about the LNP side, please contact the Mozambicans.

Kind regards
Raymond

Latest on The PNL (Parque Nacional do Limpopo) and Giriyondo. Note the bit where it says that tourists could be allowed in from 'next month' i.e. December. Could that mean that Giriyondo will be open? Will keep you posted.

"MAPUTO, November 16 -- Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe have now agreed to officially inaugurate the Greater Limpopo Cross-Frontier Park in the first quarter of 2006.

The 4.4 million square-kilometre Park resulted from the merger of the South African Kruger National Park, Zimbabwe`s Gonarezhou Park, and Mozambique`s Limpopo National Park, to boost eco-tourism as well as forest and wildlife conservation.

Mozambique`s Tourism Minister Fernando Sumbana told reporters Tuesday that Heads of State of the three countries were working on the inauguration of the Park in early 2006.

The launch was initially scheduled for this month, but was postponed because of South African President Thabo Mbeki`s engagement.

"All conditions have been created for the Park to start receiving some tourists," Sumbana said, adding that the technical commission for the implementation of the Park had proposed that tourists could be allowed in from next month.

According to him, work already completed include the new border post between South Africa and Mozambique at Giriyondo, accommodation for Park employees, and the tourism development plan. "
