Where to stay in Vilanculos?

Dear Mike,

I bought a Globetrotter Mozambique -guidebook in Finland. Is it written by you :)?

Me and my boyfriend are travelling to Mozambique in the end of February, and considering to stay one week in Vilanculos/ Bazaruto.
I read your post of Gabriel's Lodge. Is it closed now?? It was the only reasonably priced place I found on the islands.

I guess we have to stay in Vilanculos. We wanted to stay in Casa rex, but it is also too expensive (95 dollars pppn).
I would like to find a peaceful and safe place with good food and max 100 dollars for a room/hut for two. And preferably with a nice beach in front ;). I've been reading about different places, but didn't manage to find any recommendations. Could you recommend one?

We would just like to relax and enjoy snorkeling and maybe diving in archipelago. So do you have any idea of a good diving center in Vilanculos? I've just completed a diving course in Finland and would like to do my first dives in Bazaruto. (in finland water was +8 degrees celcius and visibility was 5 meters...)

Thank you already in advance for your help!

Hi

Yes I wrote the Globetrotter guide - I hope that you got the 2006 update - it has a picture of tourists at Benguerra lodge beach on the cover.

In Vilankulo have you looked up Vilanculos Beach resort or Aguia Negra? They both have dive operations. There is also a dive operation running from baobab beach.

Have you looked at all the options on "Take Mozguide With You" PDF guides on mozguide front page.

Also do contact Margie Toens of Tourist Services in Vilanculos This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. If she can't help then noone can.

And I am afraid that Gabriels is certainly closed and will never reopen except as the new 5 star resort.

Hi Tintti,

Mayby you should check-out the possibility's for camping on the island. Ok, it's illegal and not luxuriuos, but the islands are realy great and you can snorkel / dive as much as you want for only +/-35 dollars. I don't know if i can mention the name and company there but you can always look around of course. I've been there in Oktober together with 6 people and it was the highlight of my stay in Mozambique...

Hey Franco please let us know the name of the company. If you are thinking of Sail Away, mu understanding is that, officially anyway, they no longer overnight on any of the islands since the closure of Gabriels.

My own attitude is that as there are thousands of local people who live completely legitimately on Bazaruto and Benguerra, they surely wouldn't mind having a friendly visitor as their guest for a few days. I have experienced this in the past, but yes make sure that you pay your reserve fees in Vilankulo before you depart for each of the days you anticipate staying on the islands.

Thanks for the input.

Mike
