Hi

books have been written covering a question such as this. So many different options: For example you could go via Zambia and Botswana and take in the Luangwa Park and Victoria Falls, or you could go via Mwanza, Tete, Chimoio then down the Moz coast to Maputo and then into SA, or you could go via Mulanje and Mocuba and down the main road to Maputo, taking in Gorongosa and the coast. And then of course we wait to see what is going to happen in Zimbabwe and if it all miraculously turns out all right then I would most certainly consider going Tete - Chimoio - Mutare and see the marvels of Zimbabwe by far the most interesting country in Africa before arriving in SA.

Do you want the shortest, or the easiest, or the most challenging, or the most varied, or the most coastal route?

your right,

There are a lot of books, we are going to backpack probably without a car. So busses and public transportation will be our transport.

So i'll specify offcourse, we want to do some diving and hiking, and if possible see the big five, is december allready the raining season??

So is gorongsa open? and is the east of zimbadwe worth visiting?

OK

take the bus via Tete to Chimoio where you can stay at Pink Papaya. The rains really only start at the end of December and if they have not started yet, Gorongosa will still be open so take transport to via Inchope towards Gorongosa Town and get dropped off at the turn-off from the main road to the Park (Chitengo). You can arrange park people to pick you up or there will be quite a lot of transport going to Chitengo that you can get a lift with. Best to have a tent if going to Gorongosa and actually all over Moz and SA it is best to have your own tent.

Then go south and do the standard stop offs at Vilankulo (Zombie Cucumber), Inhambane and then enter SA and go to a backpackers in Nelspruit, see www.funkymonkeys.co.za/ from where you can arrange a guided tour to Kruger where you will have a good chance of seeing the big five (no chance in Moz).

The East of Zimbabwe is one of my favourite parts of the world - Chimimani Park and Bvumba are amazing but we will have to wait and see what happens in Zim. If you do decide to go your best option for accomm in Mutare is Ann Bruce's backpackers / guesthouse 99 Fourth Street, Mutare. + 263 206 569. See: www.epinions.com/content_141234638468

Lot's more info in this forum so use the search function and also see the PDF downloads linked on mozguide front page which are excellent.

No chance of renting a car in Malawi and dropping in SA or Moz. And I do not think that Zim is off-limits - very quiet and very few irritating tourists - can't think of a better time to go. Amazingly things just keep on working, at a basic level.
