Hi again

further relevant info: The smaller boat owners sometimes charge according to what they think you are worth, so tourists may be asked ridiculous fees. Perhaps better to wait for the vehicle ferry. The number for the ferry captain +255 78 772 4928 (he is on WhatsApp).

At the northern edge of Quionga village, which is 27km from Namoto border (the river is 3km from Namoto), there is a wooden house on stilts where missionaries Andre and Annemarie Thiart live. They have a grassed and shady campsite with clean ablutions, but you must have your own tent. Email Andre This email address is being protected from spambots. Hello Mike,

Thanks for keeping this post up to date, there is not much info to be found about the section between Mtwara & Pemba.

I'm considering making the trip down next week from Mtwara to Pemba and back with public transport. From your recent posts it seems the conditions have improved vastly. How long do you reckon it takes to travel this route? Are there regular minibuses or other forms of transport available? Ideally I would like to make it down to Pemba as quickly as possible.

Any insights or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Jesse

Hi Jesse
I have not been this way for many years, but the roads as far south as Mtwara have been improved although during the March to May rains, temporary flooding can still block sections.

There are a few buses travelling direct and 8 hours seems to be average.
From Mtwara South to the Kilambo border is unpaved so also difficult in rains. Dala - Dalas do the route every day. Then a few km to the Rovuma River where use the ferry or small boats. Ask a local to pay on your behalf or you could pay more.

From the Mozambique side of the Rovuma it is 3km to the border post at Namoto. Officially visas should now be issued here for $50 on arrival, but better to get this in Darlington especially Salaam.

Go well

Hello Mike,

Thanks so much for the quick response. Once having crossed over into Moz, how long do you reckon it will take to get to Pemba using public transport? Is that doable in a day? Also hearing some things on security issues in the area there, do you know if it's safe to travel through there at the moment?

Thanks again,

Jesse
