Sorry to hear about your run in with the soldiers. Was this on the Zimbabwean or Mozambican side?
My standard procedure and advice is to keep cameras well out of sight around police, soldiers and any officials and their buildings, installations.
This applies to almost anywhere in Africa and other parts of the world that I have lived and traveled in.
I have used this border eight times over the past ten years. Apart from the officious and irritating CIO person at the boom gate exit from the Sango border area into Zimbabwe, who sometimes makes a big issue of finding an engine number, I have found this border to be friendly and so much better than Beitbridge.
